You turn on the sprinklers and one head sends water straight into the air. Or the whole zone stays dry while the timer looks fine. Before you pay for a new system, find out which part has failed.
So replacing one standard spray head at Sage Solutions in Denver is $150 for the call + $45 for the head = $195. Sage’s rotor total is $150 + $95 = $245, before applicable parts tax.
Those sums use Sage’s published repair menu. They are examples for one visit, not a national average or a price for rebuilding the whole yard.
I will explain the different repairs, the visit charges and the backflow costs that can sit outside a sprinkler quote. This guide covers lawn irrigation.
What Is Included in the Service Call?
The trip charge can be a large part of a small repair. At JC Apex in Plano, Texas, the $75 diagnostic is applied toward the repair. Sage’s $150 service call is added to its repair items.
Ask whether the visit fee is added to the repair price or counted toward it, and get the total before work starts. A low price beside a replacement part means little if you have not included the charge for getting someone to the house.
For an active leak, JC Apex offers an emergency visit with water shut-off. Repairs are scheduled for the next business day.
Heads, Valves and Leaking Lines
A damaged head is at the end of the system. A valve controls a zone, and a buried line carries its water. Finding the failed part is what separates a quick swap from a digging job.

| Repair at Sage Solutions | Repair Item | With Its Service Call |
|---|---|---|
| 2- or 4-inch spray head and nozzle | $45 | $150 + $45 = $195; Sage |
| Rotor head | $95 | $150 + $95 = $245; Sage |
| Control valve part replacement | $150 | $150 + $150 = $300; Sage |
| One control valve replaced in its box | $495 | $150 + $495 = $645; Sage |
| Poly line break or leak | $60 | $150 + $60 = $210; Sage |
The table is for separate visits, before applicable parts tax. Several repairs done together need one combined quote. Do not multiply the trip charge by the number of heads.
Pipe work gets harder when the break is buried deep or hidden beneath roots. Sage leaves other plastic pipe leaks and root removal open for an estimate, so its poly-line item should not become a price for every underground leak.
JC Apex’s leak repairs are $150 to $300+, including excavation and pipe replacement where needed. Its $250 to $450+ valve repairs cover work such as diaphragms, solenoids and valve bodies.
A valve repair and a complete replacement are different jobs. If the body is intact, ask what failed inside it before comparing a rebuild with cutting the valve out of the pipe.
When the Controller Is the Problem
Sage prices electrical diagnosis separately from controller replacement. Ask the technician to identify the fault before ordering a new controller.

JC Apex installs standard and smart controllers for $300 to $900+. The number of zones and the chosen controller affect the quote.
Keep a record of your watering schedule before replacement. Then have every zone run from the new controller so you can see that the connections, coverage and programming are right.
Backflow Testing Is a Separate Job
The backflow assembly helps keep irrigation water from flowing into the drinking-water supply. A working sprinkler head does not tell you whether that assembly passes its required test.
In central Indiana, HtL Irrigation charges $75 for a backflow test. Filing with Carmel, Citizens or Indiana American adds $15, making $75 + $15 = $90 for those utilities.
City filing fees are different from the tester’s bill. Wentzville, Missouri, charges $14 for a report received before June 1, or $38 after July 5.
Wentzville requires annual testing for lawn irrigation. Round Rock, Texas, uses a seven-year interval for low-hazard devices such as residential irrigation.
Your water provider determines the device and testing requirements for your property. Use its approved tester process rather than assuming another city’s schedule applies.
A failed test may need parts rather than a whole assembly. At Sage, a 3/4-inch Febco part replacement with installation is $150, plus the $150 call: $300 before parts tax.
By comparison, JC Apex’s complete backflow replacement is $650 to $1,000+. Confirm whether the required test, any retest and filing are included.
Can You Handle a Broken Head Yourself?
If the damage is limited to an accessible head, Rain Bird’s replacement guide can help. Match the nozzle and spray pattern as well as the body.
Hidden leaks, buried valves and backflow work are better reasons to call an irrigation specialist. Tell them whether the trouble happens during one zone, every zone or even when watering is off.
When a soggy patch reaches the house, mention that too. A sprinkler leak outside needs a different investigation from water escaping under the house, covered in our slab leak repair guide.
Questions About Sprinkler Repair Bills
Can a head that sprays poorly need cleaning instead of replacement?
Yes. Rain Bird identifies a clogged nozzle or filter as a possible cause of a short spray or no spray. Its troubleshooting guide recommends rinsing those parts.
Can the technician raise a head instead of replacing it?
Sometimes a buried or tilted head needs repositioning. A cracked body or damaged fitting is a different repair, so show the technician what happens while that zone runs.
Is backflow testing the same as a sprinkler tune-up?
No. Testing checks the backflow assembly. A tune-up checks watering coverage and operation; make sure the appointment you book covers the task you need.
Should I replace every head when one breaks?
One broken head does not establish that the others have failed. Have the remaining heads checked for damage and coverage before agreeing to replace them.
