The drain has backed up again, and this time the plumber is talking about replacing the pipe across your yard. Before you agree to the digging, you need to know how much pipe is bad and whether it can be repaired in place.
So what does sewer line replacement cost? Western Rooter in Southern California gives $5,000 to $10,000 for most homeowners in its service area, within a wider $3,000 to $20,000-plus range.
I will walk you through digging, pipe bursting and lining, then the camera visit, permits and owners’ bills. These are published local prices, checked October 17, 2026, for homes connected to a public sewer.
What You Get for the Replacement Price
Western Rooter’s replacement guide gives $50 to $300 per foot across pipe types and site conditions. A complete house-to-street job can exceed $10,000.
That broad per-foot range does not tell you which method your home needs. Dig-and-replace opens a trench so the crew can remove the old pipe. It also leaves the ground, and sometimes paving, to put back.
With pipe bursting, a head breaks the old pipe while pulling a new one through its route. Lining instead forms a new inner pipe inside the existing one. Both reduce excavation, but they solve different problems.

Trenchless Prices From a San Diego Plumber
Almco Plumbing publishes the following job examples on its pipe bursting and CIPP lining pages:
Notice that the whole-job example costs more than simply multiplying the per-foot rate. Access holes, work inside the house and preparing the old pipe can change what is included.

These are estimates; your written contract sets the final work and price. I would compare bids using the same start point, end point, pipe length and restoration work.
How Much to Replace 50 Feet of Sewer Line?
Using Almco’s published bursting rate, the pipe-length calculation is 50 × $135 = $6,750 to 50 × $165 = $8,250. That is a calculation from its rate, rather than a quote for your finished yard.
For lining, Almco’s $5,500 to $7,000 example already covers 30 to 50 feet of 4-inch clay pipe with hydro jetting. Cast iron needing descaling has its own price in the table.
When Digging Still Makes Sense
A low spot, often called a belly, holds water instead of letting it drain away. Almco warns that bursting follows the old route and will not correct that sag. Replacing the pipe along the same path is not enough to fix its slope.
Pipe bursting still needs access holes at both ends. Nearby utilities, hard ground and a pipe passing through the foundation can also limit the method or add work, as Almco explains.
For a pipe with the wrong slope, ask how the proposed work will restore drainage. For a sound route with damaged pipe walls, lining or bursting may avoid opening the full length of your yard.
Camera Inspection and City Fees
Western Rooter’s regular weekday camera price starts at $175 through a ground-level cleanout. Access through a single-story roof vent starts at $225.
Have the plumber show you where the damage begins and ends on the video. A blocked pipe and a broken pipe can both cause a backup, but clearing a blockage does not require buying a whole new line.
City fees depend on where the work takes place. Portland requires separate permits for private-property work and work in the public right-of-way. Its July 10, 2026 fee table includes:
The first three Portland fees add up to $384 + $57 + $376.61 = $817.61. That sum leaves out the private-property plumbing permit and any additional work or permits your project needs.
Street cutting also means restoring the surface. Portland inspects that restoration. Ask for paving, traffic control and any street-opening charges as separate lines; the sewer permit alone does not buy a repaired road.
What Owners Paid or Were Facing
The accounts below are useful for seeing what the work involved. Each one is a single home, so I would not use it as a price to expect for yours.
- A DC Urban Moms poster on October 2, 2025 reported $12,000 to repair a root-damaged sewer pipe between house and street roughly a year earlier. The post does not give the length.
- In an August 29, 2023 Fairfax discussion, an owner described a similar sagging-line problem and about $45,000 to replace the line and repair afterward. Payment and the full work breakdown are not stated.
The big difference is what has to be opened and put back. A short yard repair, a full lateral and a job involving the road should not be treated as three quotes for the same work.
Questions About Replacing a Sewer Pipe
Is trenchless replacement always cheaper?
No. Access, pipe condition and ground conditions matter. Its saving can come from avoiding surface demolition, while a sagging route may still need excavation to correct the slope.
Does lining replace the old sewer pipe?
It creates an inner pipe within the old one. Bursting breaks the old pipe and pulls a replacement through its route. Ask which method is actually included in your bid.
Does the city pay for the part under the street?
Do not assume that the property boundary ends your responsibility. Portland requires a repair permit for lateral work in the right-of-way. Your own sewer authority must confirm who maintains each section.
If your house drains to a tank instead of a public sewer, use the septic tank replacement guide.
