Short answer

Compressor and relay prices, sealed-system labor, LG warranty coverage and the repair-versus-new-fridge decision.

The fridge light still comes on, but the milk is warm and the repair person has mentioned a new compressor. Before you buy another refrigerator, find out whether you are paying for the part, the labor, or both.

So refrigerator compressor replacement is $600 to $1,000 in Appliance Fix’s Arlington price guide. Northern Virginia’s RefrigeratorRepair.com gives a broader $600 to $1,250 parts-and-labor estimate.

I will show you what belongs in that job, how a sealed-system warranty changes the bill, and why owners of built-in refrigerators sometimes spend much more. US prices were checked October 18, 2026.

Is It Really the Compressor?

A clicking fridge needs a diagnosis before it needs a compressor. RefrigeratorRepair.com describes starting relays, inverter boards and refrigerant leaks among the faults its technicians separate from compressor failure.

For comparison, Appliance Fix’s Arlington guide prices a compressor start relay at $150 to $250, a control board at $300 to $550, and an evaporator fan motor at $250 to $400.

Ask what test showed that the compressor failed. Replacing a relay attached to the compressor is a different repair from cutting the compressor out of the refrigerant circuit.

What a Compressor Replacement Price Includes

Here are the two repair companies’ published estimates. These are starting points for a local quote, not a measured US average.

Compressor replacementAppliance Fix, Arlington repair guide$600 – $1,000
Compressor replacement, parts and laborRefrigeratorRepair.com, Northern Virginia$600 – $1,250
Residential compressor part aloneRefrigeratorRepair.com, before fitting$150 – $500
Sealed-system laborRefrigeratorRepair.com, access and unit affect the job$300 – $800

The last two rows describe parts of a repair. Do not add them to either complete-job range.

RefrigeratorRepair.com’s job description includes a filter drier, refrigerant handling, brazing, a vacuum and a measured recharge. It allows two to four hours on site for a standard freestanding refrigerator.

Have the quote name the compressor, drier, refrigerant work and labor. It should also explain whether diagnosis, tax, access work and any other failed parts are extra, and give the repair’s parts and labor warranty.

The EPA’s Section 608 rules require certification for covered refrigerant service. Type I covers small appliances. Choose a sealed-system technician trained for your fridge’s refrigerant.

RefrigeratorRepair.com allows several more hours for the fridge to cool after the repair. Plan to keep your food in a cooler while you wait.

Does the Warranty Cover Labor Too?

A long compressor warranty can sound like a promise of a free repair. The labor period may end sooner than the parts period.

For example, LG’s US support page for the LRFXS3106S gives the sealed system five years of parts and labor coverage. Its linear/inverter compressor has ten years of parts coverage and five years of labor.

That wording belongs to this model. Find your own model and purchase date, then ask the maker to confirm coverage and arrange authorized service before approving a private repair.

Once labor coverage has ended, a covered compressor can still leave you with a bill. Ask the maker which refrigerant, diagnosis and fitting charges remain yours.

What Owners Paid or Were Quoted

These older Houzz accounts show why the work and the refrigerator type matter. They are separate examples, not today’s standard price for replacing a compressor.

The South Florida owner later explained that cabinetry and a long replacement wait helped make the repair worthwhile. A fridge that fits an awkward opening has value beyond its age.

Repair the Compressor or Buy a New Fridge?

I would compare the complete repair quote with a replacement that actually fits. Measure the opening, door clearance and delivery route, then include delivery, removal and any cabinet changes in the new-fridge price.

Repair makes more sense when the cabinet, doors and controls are in good condition, the fault is isolated, and warranty coverage reduces your share. A built-in unit deserves that comparison even when it is older.

A new fridge becomes more attractive when several parts are failing, the cabinet is damaged, or the sealed system has already needed repeated work. The repair warranty and time without cooling belong in that decision too.

If the old fridge has been leaking refrigerant, ask where the leak is and whether the proposed job fixes it. Paying for a new compressor while leaving the cause unresolved is a poor starting point.

Questions About Replacing a Fridge Compressor

Does a Running Compressor Mean the Fridge Is Working?

No. RefrigeratorRepair.com describes leaks and restrictions that leave a compressor running without useful cooling. Temperature and system tests are needed to identify the fault.

Should I Buy the Compressor Online First?

I would let the repair company confirm the model and failed part first. Ask whether it accepts customer-supplied parts and what warranty would apply before ordering anything.
