Short answer

Fixing an exhaust leak costs about $150 to $350 for a simple weld at a shop and $150 to $400 to weld in a new flex pipe. A new muffler is about $350 to $1,000 with parts and labor at an Austin shop for luxury cars.

Your car got loud almost overnight. It roars at every stop light, or something ticks under the hood when the engine is cold, and now and then you catch a smell of exhaust in traffic.

Something in the exhaust is leaking, and you want to know what the fix will cost before you hand over the keys.

So how much does it cost to fix an exhaust leak? About $150 to $350 for a simple weld at a shop, and $150 to $400 to weld in a new flex pipe, by the price list of a repair shop in Austin, Texas.

A new muffler is a bigger job. The same shop puts most muffler swaps on the luxury cars it works on at $350 to $1,000, and with Hyundai’s own part price and job time I worked out about $260 for one Elantra.

In this guide I will show you what each kind of leak costs, what the parts cost, how long the carmakers say a muffler takes, and what owners were quoted and paid.

Where the Leak Is Decides the Price

An exhaust can leak anywhere between the engine and the tailpipe: at a gasket near the engine, at the flex pipe under the front seats, or at a rusty muffler at the back.

Luxury Auto Works, a repair shop in Austin that works on luxury and imported cars, publishes its prices. Here they are, from its exhaust leak and flex pipe pages of February 2026:

Simple weld (crack, pinhole, loose hanger)custom sections may cost more$150 – $350
Manifold or downpipe gasketparts and labor$180 – $450
Weld-in flex pipemost mainstream cars$150 – $400
Bolt-on front pipe with the flex section$700 – $1,400+ on some European or turbo cars$300 – $900
Oxygen sensor bung repair$120 – $300
New gaskets, hangers or extra pipeadded to the bill$25 – $150

The shop writes that Austin shops that specialize in imported cars charge $140 to $195 an hour. That is above the US average of $132 an hour that Tekmetric, a company that makes software for repair shops, found in June 2026.

A broken hanger is the cheap case, and worth fixing fast. The shop warns that a $20 hanger can save a $600 muffler, because a sagging exhaust strains the joints in front of it.

Weld It or Replace It?

For a torn flex pipe the Austin shop gives three choices: weld in a new flex section, fit a bolt-on assembly, or replace the whole front pipe.

Its rule of thumb is simple. If the pipe around the flex section is solid and there is room to weld, welding in a new section is the cheaper fix.

If oxygen sensors or the catalytic converter sit right next to it and the bolts are rusty, the bolt-on part can save trouble. Exhaust tape, paste and clamp-on sleeves only buy time, the shop adds, since they burn out or start leaking again.

What a New Muffler Costs

On many cars the muffler and the tail pipe come as one part. Here are the factory prices on parts websites run by Toyota and Hyundai dealers, checked October 7, 2026:

Muffler with tail pipe, 2015 Toyota Camrythree versions$329.43 – $357.90
Muffler with tail pipe, 2012 Toyota Tacoma$477.98 – $522.92
Center muffler, 2018 Hyundai Elantra 2.0list price $273.34$194.55
Front pipe, 2015 Toyota Camry$984.76 – $1,318.96
Front pipe, 2012 Toyota Tacoma$1,044.92 and up with a catalytic converter$916.81 – $1,428.09

Aftermarket mufflers cost less. John Paul, AAA Northeast’s Car Doctor, answered a 2005 Chevy Cobalt owner in November 2024 that the factory muffler is $600 and the factory exhaust pipe $800.

He added that aftermarket parts cut those prices by 50 percent or more, that the job takes about two hours, and that shops now charge $120 to $265 an hour.

The Austin shop prices the muffler alone at $250 to $800 for a good stainless aftermarket one and $350 to $1,100 or more from the carmaker. Fitting it takes 1 to 3 hours there.

How Long the Carmakers Say It Takes

Carmakers publish the time they pay their dealers for a warranty job, and those times are a good check on a quote.

Hyundai gives its dealers 0.5 hours to replace the center muffler on a 2018 or 2019 Elantra with the 2.0 engine. Its bulletin from February 2020 is about a weak weld at the muffler that can leak.

So with Hyundai’s part price and Tekmetric’s average rate, that job works out to $194.55 + (0.5 × $132) = $260.55, plus a clamp.

Bigger trucks take longer. A Chrysler bulletin from December 2014 gives 0.8 hours to replace the muffler on 2014 Ram 2500 and 3500 pickups with the 6.4 engine.

Check Whether Your Car Is Covered First

Some leaks are known faults. Hyundai found a weak weld where the center muffler joins the pipe on some 2014 and 2015 Tucsons, built from July 1, 2014 to May 15, 2015.

In January 2025 it extended the warranty on that muffler to 15 years or 150,000 miles, and the extension stays with the car when it is sold.

So before you pay for a muffler, ask a dealer of your brand to check your VIN for bulletins and warranty extensions. It costs nothing to ask.

What Owners Paid

Here is what owners on Toyota Nation, Tacoma World and the Tundras forum were quoted or paid, with links to their posts:

So a muffler shop that welds in a new section can cost a fraction of a whole new part. The Solara quote of $1,500 and the Camry bill of $65 were both for a flex pipe.

Price bars: Camry flex pipe at a muffler shop $65; simple weld at an Austin shop $150 to $350; weld-in flex pipe $150 to $400; manifold gasket $180 to $450; Elantra center muffler, worked out, $260.55; Walker muffler, DC shop quote, $400; muffler swap on luxury cars in Austin $350 to $1,000; Solara flex pipe, shop quote, $1,500

Is It Safe to Drive With an Exhaust Leak?

The danger is the fumes. Luxury Auto Works writes that any exhaust smell inside the car means you should stop driving it and have it checked, because carbon monoxide has no color and is dangerous.

A ticking near the engine, a strong exhaust smell at idle or after parking in the garage can all point to a leak at the manifold, the flex pipe or a joint, the shop adds.
