Your International truck needs an engine, and the replacement quote may be more than you paid for the truck. Before you decide what to do, find out whether that quote buys a long block, a complete engine or the whole fitted job.
So a remanufactured MaxxForce long block costs $6,600 to $13,500 across the 7, 10 and 13 models at US Engine Production. Installation and other work come on top.
Sedalia, Missouri received a $32,409.49 engine replacement quote before towing in 2022. Sparta, Michigan received a $41,476.78 quote in 2024. These older quotes are examples, not today’s national range.
I will show you what those jobs included, the rebuild option Sparta chose, and how the old MaxxForce settlement differs from a replacement engine warranty.
Engine Prices Depend on Which MaxxForce You Have
MaxxForce is a family name, not one interchangeable engine. Give the seller your engine serial number, truck VIN and engine model so it can confirm the right unit before you order.
US Engine Production publishes these remanufactured long-block prices, checked October 17, 2026:
The seller’s MaxxForce 13 list includes internal parts such as pistons, bearings, camshaft, oil pump and valve-train parts. It does not list a turbo or fuel injection equipment in that long-block package.

Ask which components must transfer from your old engine and which need replacing. Also get any core deposit, freight charge and old-engine return conditions in the quote.
Inside a $41,476.78 Replacement Quote
Sparta’s October 2024 council packet includes MHK Equipment Services’ September 30 quote for its 2015 International dump truck. Here is the actual remanufactured-engine option:
That quote allowed one to three weeks for the engine to arrive. Lead time is separate from the 55 labor hours, and both matter if your truck earns money only when it is working.

This is why I would not add a few hours of labor to an online long-block price and call it a replacement estimate. The package, truck access and failed parts decide how much work remains.
What Truck Owners Were Quoted
These city records show quotes and approval for a rebuild. They do not show what the final bills were.
- Sedalia’s November 18, 2022 memo recommended $32,409.49 from Scheppers International for a 2013 International 7400 with a MaxxForce DT. Towing to Jefferson City was extra.
- Sparta’s October 3, 2024 memo compared the $41,476.78 reman replacement with a $31,151.02 rebuild. Staff authorized the rebuild under its emergency purchasing authority.
- On August 28, 2015, a Sacramento operator on TruckersReport wrote that rebuilding the MaxxForce was $16,000, against $18,000 to put a Cummins in it, and they did the Cummins swap. The short post gives no parts or labor breakdown.
Sedalia received four replacement quotes for the same truck. Its memo put Scheppers at $32,409.49, Cummins Sales and Service at $32,653.32, Foley Equipment at $35,803.82 and Rush Truck Center at $39,462.09.
Rebuild or Replace?
In Sparta’s case, MHK traced the engine damage to a failed exhaust gas recirculation cooler, usually called the EGR cooler. The rebuild needed to address that failure as well as the damaged engine.
The village’s rebuild option was $26,600.61 + $4,550.41 for the EGR cooler kit = $31,151.02. Its memo favored that option because of the truck’s age and value.
The same comparison gave the rebuild a 12-month warranty and the reman engine a 24-month warranty. The longer warranty came with the higher replacement quote.
I would want the shop’s diagnosis before choosing either route. Replacing the engine without understanding why it failed can leave another damaged component in the truck.
What Happened With the MaxxForce Class Action?
The US case concerned alleged EGR defects in certain 2011 to 2014 vehicles with MaxxForce 11- or 13-liter engines certified to EPA 2010 standards without selective catalytic reduction, or SCR.
Navistar’s filed settlement agreement provided $85 million in cash and $50 million in rebates, totaling $135 million. Navistar denied the allegations.
Class counsel’s case page records settlement approval and a claims window in 2020. This was a defined settlement, not a continuing promise to replace every MaxxForce engine free.
The US class definition above does not include MaxxForce 7 or DT engines. Do not assume a truck qualifies simply because the engine carries the MaxxForce name.
Old Warranty Terms and the Warranty You Buy Now
A Navistar warranty brochure revised in March 2010 shows how coverage differed by component. It applies to the listed TranStar, 9000i, ProStar+ and LoneStar models built from January 11, 2010.
For non-rescue applications, that schedule gave the MaxxForce 11/13 engine 24 months with unlimited mileage. Listed major components had 60 months or 500,000 miles, while injection nozzles had 24 months or 150,000 miles.
Those were separate coverages with exclusions, not five years of coverage for every engine fault. Have an International dealer check the truck’s own records if you believe a service contract still applies.
For a replacement now, US Engine Production advertises one year with unlimited mileage on the long blocks above. Get the warranty document before buying, including who pays removal and installation if the engine fails.
Sparta’s reman quote shows why that detail matters. It offered 24 months of unlimited-mileage parts coverage, but only 12 months for the listed fuel pump, injectors, turbo, HPFP sensors and harness.
Questions About MaxxForce Replacement Costs
Is a long block the same as a complete replacement engine?
No. US Engine Production’s long-block list covers internal engine and valve-train parts. Its published package does not list the turbo or fuel injection equipment. A fitted quote must account for the remaining parts and labor.
How much can installation add?
MHK’s 2024 Sparta quote allowed 55 hours at $130 an hour, or $7,150, for removing and replacing the engine. That is one dump truck job, not a labor allowance for every International.
Will the old lawsuit pay for my engine replacement now?
Do not budget on that assumption. The cited US settlement had a defined class and a claims window in 2020. Current replacement-engine coverage comes from the applicable warranty or service contract.
Is a rebuild always cheaper?
The rebuild was the cheaper option in Sparta’s comparison. Whether it works for your truck depends on the damage, usable components and the repair warranty the shop offers.
