The grass keeps growing, but your mower will not start. Before you replace it, find out whether you need a tune-up, a fuel-system repair or something more expensive.
So a basic tune-up is $75 to $100 for a push mower or $150 to $200 for a rider at Cherrone Equipment Service in Indiana. A broken part changes the bill.
I’ll walk you through sharpening, carburetors, belts and starters, then the point where I’d compare a repair with another mower. These are US gas-mower prices, checked October 19, 2026.
What Does a Lawn Mower Repair Cost?
A tune-up is maintenance. It may help a neglected mower, but it is not a promise to fix every starting or cutting problem. Have the shop identify the fault before approving extra work.
| Job | Published price | What you are buying |
|---|---|---|
| Push-mower tune-up | $75 to $100 | Oil change, spark plug, air-filter service and blade sharpening at Cherrone |
| Riding-mower tune-up | $150 to $200 | Basic service at Cherrone; confirm the checklist for your model |
| Blade sharpening | $12 per blade | Dad Fix It in Georgia; add $5 to remove a blade still on the equipment |
| Carburetor cleaning on the mower | $55 push; $75 riding | Dad Fix It labor only; parts and tax extra |
| Push-mower carburetor rebuild | $90 to $130 | Cherrone, including parts |
| Drive-belt replacement | $45 push; $65 riding | Dad Fix It labor only; the belt is extra |
| Riding-mower drive-belt replacement | $80 to $150 | Cherrone, parts and labor |
| Push-mower pull-cord replacement | $40 to $70 | Cherrone |
| Riding-mower starter motor | $150 to $250 | Cherrone |
These are two shops’ advertised prices, not a national average. Dad Fix It’s parts and tax exclusion matters: its belt labor cannot be compared directly with Cherrone’s fitted-belt price.
Why a Small Repair Can Have a Bigger Bill
At Dad Fix It, diagnosis is $80, credited toward the repair if you proceed. Pickup and return are another $50. Those charges matter when you cannot transport a riding mower.
Ask for the final amount after the diagnostic credit, with tax and collection shown. A posted sharpening price does not tell you whether a separate inspection is needed for your visit.
For one blade still fitted, Dad Fix It’s sharpening and removal charges are $12 + $5 = $17, before tax or any other work. A mower with several blades needs the number of blades on the estimate.
Cleaning a Carburetor or Replacing It
If the shop finds a fuel problem, ask whether the quote is for cleaning, rebuilding with small parts or replacing the whole carburetor. Those are different jobs, even though each may be described as a carb repair.
The genuine Briggs & Stratton 594058 carburetor is $52.23 from the maker. That is one part’s price, before installation, not a price for every mower.
Give the shop your engine and mower details so it can check the part. Briggs & Stratton warns that similar-looking parts may not fit the same engine.
Dad Fix It’s customer-supplied parts policy excludes a parts warranty and still charges labor if that part fails. Buying a cheaper part yourself does not automatically make the repair cheaper.
Belts, Blades and Starting Problems
A drive belt moves the mower; a deck belt on a rider drives the cutting equipment. Get the belt named on the estimate so a cheap drive-belt quote does not become your budget for a different job.

A pull rope and an electric starter motor are different repairs. Tell the shop whether the engine will not turn, turns without starting, or starts but the mower will not move. That is more useful than ordering a starter yourself.
For a rider, have the shop check the deck while it is there. A belt repair is less attractive if the deck also needs expensive work. Ask which faults must be fixed now and which items are routine servicing.

What One Mower Owner Was Quoted
This older Houzz quote covers a carburetor rebuild and belt together. It is not a completed invoice or a current local rate.
| Owner and post date | Quote | What was included |
|---|---|---|
| dpvirginia, October 5, 2009 | $165 | Carburetor rebuild and a new belt for an older Scotts self-propelled mower, from a Washington, DC/northern Virginia shop |
Would I Repair It or Buy Another Mower?
For a larger job, compare the complete repair estimate with a mower you would actually buy. Match self-propulsion, cutting width and collection features. Comparing your rider with the cheapest push mower will not help.
Check that a wider replacement can reach the lawn. If you are also replacing your fence, measure the gate’s clear opening around the mower you plan to keep.
Include transport and overdue maintenance in the repair total. For the replacement, check delivery, assembly and the warranty. If you are considering used equipment, find out what was serviced and whether you can see it run and cut.
Questions About Lawn Mower Repair Prices
What If the Mower Still Will Not Run After Repair?
Contact the shop before taking it somewhere else. Keep the invoice and ask about the repair warranty, its time limit and whether return transport is covered. Describe whether the original fault has returned or something new has happened.
Can I Put a Limit on the Work?
Ask the shop to contact you before exceeding an agreed total. Put that instruction on the booking so an inspection does not become permission for every repair it finds.
Do These Prices Apply to Battery Mowers?
No. This guide covers gas-powered equipment, and Dad Fix It specifically excludes battery and electric equipment. Battery, charger and electronic-control faults need a quote from a shop that handles your brand.
