Short answer

See door and labor sums, slab versus prehung fitting, two US installers' prices, paint and hardware extras, and three homeowner accounts.

Your bedroom door has a hole in it, or you are replacing the old doors while the rooms are being painted. Before buying a new one, find out whether the frame can stay. That choice changes both the shopping list and the fitting bill.

So interior door installation works out to $360 to $670 for a hollow-core prehung door using Klein Carpentry’s Jacksonville prices. That combines its door-unit allowance with labor for fitting and new casing.

For solid core, the same Klein figures give $500 to $1,050. I will show you the sums, what labor costs at other US installers, and what homeowners paid. These prices were checked October 28, 2026.

How Much Does One Door Cost With Installation?

A prehung door comes attached to its own frame. Casing is the trim around the opening. Klein Carpentry separates the unit from installation with new casing, which lets you see where the money goes.

Hollow-core prehung unitKlein Carpentry, Jacksonville, material allowance$110 to $220
Solid-core prehung unitKlein Carpentry, Jacksonville, material allowance$250 to $600
Install prehung unit with new casingKlein Carpentry, Jacksonville, labor per door$250 to $450
Hollow-core worked totalKlein figures: $110 + $250 = $360; $220 + $450 = $670$360 to $670
Solid-core worked totalKlein figures: $250 + $250 = $500; $600 + $450 = $1,050$500 to $1,050

These sums cover the unit and the stated fitting labor. Confirm the cost of casing materials, handles, painting, removal, disposal and tax before treating the sum as your finished bill.

Klein Carpentry Jacksonville worked sums: hollow core $110-$220 unit plus $250-$450 labor equals $360-$670; solid core $250-$600 plus $250-$450 equals $500-$1,050.

Can You Keep the Existing Frame?

If the jamb is straight and sound, you can replace just the moving door panel, called the slab. The new panel needs to fit the old opening, hinge positions and latch. Klein’s slab service includes matching those cuts.

A prehung replacement changes the panel and jamb together. The old jamb and casing come out, then the installer sets, shims and fastens the new frame before fitting the trim around it.

A slab replacement changes the door panel and retains a suitable existing jamb. A prehung replacement changes the door panel and jamb together.

JELD-WEN’s prehung instructions require a square, level and plumb installation. I would have a crooked frame assessed before buying a slab; a new panel alone leaves the frame problem to be solved.

For a slab, confirm the panel size and thickness, hinge locations, handle hole and swing direction. For a prehung unit, also confirm the rough opening and jamb depth. Have the person fitting it approve those details before you order.

Labor Prices From Two US Installers

Here is what two businesses publish for installation. These are labor prices in their own service areas, with the door purchased separately.

Klein Carpentry, Jacksonville FLslab replacement, labor per door$135 to $250
Klein Carpentry, Jacksonville FLprehung with new casing, labor per door$250 to $450
NE Handyman, Poconos and Lehigh Valley PAinterior slab installation, labor$255
NE Handyman, Poconos and Lehigh Valley PAinterior prehung installation with trim, labor$425

Klein and NE Handyman name new casing or trim in their prehung service. If your existing trim needs to stay, tell the installer before comparing the slab and prehung options.

Painting, Handles and the Work Around the Frame

A door can be hung and working while still needing paint. NE Handyman’s Pennsylvania menu separates these finishing and hardware services from installation:

Paint a flat slab doorNE Handyman labor menu$65
Paint an interior doorNE Handyman labor menu$90
Door sanding and primerNE Handyman labor menu$85
Install interior knob, existing holeNE Handyman labor menu$25 per door
Install interior knob, no holeNE Handyman labor menu$55 per door

Ask which of those services your door needs and whether the installation price already covers the handle. Adding every menu item automatically could count work twice.

NE Handyman’s normal visit minimum is $175 for up to two hours. Some small fixed-price jobs can use a $125 trip minimum instead. The lower menu amounts above are not standalone visit totals.

JELD-WEN requires finishing all six sides of an unfinished slab, along with the frame. That includes the top and bottom edges. Factory primer and a completed paint finish are different things.

Removing old casing can expose wall damage or paint lines. Agree who patches and paints the wall, and how the new casing will meet the existing baseboards.

NE Handyman separately prices materials, pickup, disposal, unusual site conditions and travel outside its normal area when needed. A wider opening also brings framing and wall work beyond hanging a replacement in the same space.

What Homeowners Paid or Were Quoted

Three older accounts on DC Urban Moms show the difference between a door purchase, installation labor and a whole-house order:

  • On May 28, 2023, at 21:12, a homeowner reported paying a little more than $5,000 for eight interior doors from Simply Doors and Closets in Alexandria, installation included.
  • On May 29, 2023, at 22:03, another homeowner reported paying $150 for their MDF doors and $350 per door for installation, including new jambs. The price was negotiated as part of a larger construction project.
  • On May 30, 2023, at 11:38, a homeowner had been quoted about $15,000 for roughly 21 heavy doors to match a basement renovation. They had not gone ahead with the order.

The first account leaves the door core and trim details open. The second includes new jambs. Keep those differences in mind when comparing a whole-house package with a price for hanging a slab.

Should You Fit the Door Yourself?

If you already have the tools and experience to cut hinge recesses and fit a latch, replacing a slab in a sound jamb may suit you. Matching the old hinge cuts is part of the work, even when the panel is the right size.

A prehung unit saves that hinge-fitting step, but the frame still needs to be set correctly. JELD-WEN’s instructions also cover shims, fastening, hardware and finishing. Allow for the whole job when deciding what you can take on.

For several rooms, ask for a quote listing each opening, door type, hardware, casing and disposal. Klein uses that format for its own quotes.

Before the installer leaves, swing each door, check the latch and look at the gaps around the panel. Check that each door clears your finished floor.

Questions About Interior Door Installation Prices

Is It Cheaper to Replace Only the Door Slab?

The slab labor prices above are lower than each installer’s prehung prices. A slab also keeps the existing jamb, but it needs careful fitting. A damaged or crooked jamb can change which option makes sense.

Does a Prehung Door Include the Handle?

Do not assume it does. A prehung door includes the panel hung in its frame. Confirm the lockset, casing and finish against the product listing and installation quote.

How Long Does Interior Door Installation Take?

Klein Carpentry allows one to two hours per slab replacement or two to three hours per prehung door. Its prehung scope includes new casing on both sides. Ask separately about the finishing schedule.

Do I Need a New Door If It Only Sticks?

Have the hinges, strike and frame checked first. NE Handyman offers door adjustments and strike relocation, so replacement is not the only service to ask about.
