Your driveway has ruts again, or you need a new lane across the yard to reach a garage. Before ordering another load of gravel, find out whether you are paying for a fresh surface or for rebuilding the ground underneath.
So Mann Excavation & Sitework publishes about $1.50 to $4 per square foot installed for new gravel driveways in Central Indiana. Its resurfacing table is $800 to $2,500 per project, with a different amount of work involved.
I checked the contractor pages on October 25, 2026. I will show you the construction and repair scopes, work through a measured driveway and compare owner quotes that cover very different parts of a job.
New Driveway, Resurfacing or Rut Repair?
Mann’s 2026 pricing guide is based on the work it performs and quotes around Central Indiana. The ranges assume normal access, no rock and no unusual disposal requirements.
The installed price includes stone. Do not add a full material order again unless the contractor has clearly quoted labor or preparation only.
Mann’s illustrative Avon scenario puts fresh topping and grading for an 80 x 12-foot drive at about $1,400. Its new 250-foot rural-drive scenario in Hendricks County is about $6,300 for base and surface stone.
Mann’s Plainfield repair scenario is about $1,200 for potholes, ruts and re-crowning on a 150-foot drive. Its new rural scenario omits the width. These are illustrations, not records of completed jobs.

Length Alone Does Not Tell You the Price
Measure the width as well as the length, including any separate parking or turning area. For a 12 x 100-foot lane, 12 x 100 = 1,200 square feet.
A separate 20 x 20-foot pad adds 400 square feet. If it does not overlap that lane, the combined area is 1,200 + 400 = 1,600 square feet.
At Mann’s new-driveway rates, my planning sums are 1,600 x $1.50 = $2,400 and 1,600 x $4 = $6,400. That calculation needs the contractor’s site check before it becomes a quote.

Give the estimator the whole layout, including passing space, garage access and the entrance at the road. A long narrow lane and a wide parking court can have similar areas but different shaping and drainage work.
The Base and Compaction Are Part of the Job
Erickson Asphalt in Minnesota describes excavation, compacting the ground, placing aggregate in lifts and compacting the surface. Its clay-soil construction also uses geotextile fabric.
Erickson’s published standard sandy-subsoil range is $1.20 to $1.60 per square foot. Its clay-subsoil range, with fabric and a thicker base, is $1.50 to $2 per square foot.
Its calculator has a $1,000 project minimum. Keep that minimum attached to Erickson’s service, rather than applying it to the Indiana examples or every contractor you call.
I would ask the installer to identify the existing soil and the layers it plans to build. Agree the aggregate type, compacted thickness and equipment work instead of comparing only the amount dumped at the site.
For a stone-only purchase, my dump truck load of gravel guide covers yard prices and delivery. An installed driveway needs the site work described here as well.
What Owners Were Quoted
These US forum accounts show why the scope needs to stay with the amount. Two are delivered-material estimates; the Texas post is a driveway quote without enough detail to calculate a unit price.
- On November 25, 2025, Texas member 930dreamer had a $5,000 quote for a 100-foot gravel drive at a shop. The post gives no width or itemized construction scope.
- On January 7, 2021, Central New York member jives expected about $2,500 delivered for 100 tons of stone, to top an existing 6,500-square-foot drive and parking area. The owner handled ongoing dragging.
- On August 27, 2024, New England member future_vision shared an $8,825 base-material and delivery quote for a 600 x 12-foot drive and a 38 x 55-foot garage area. Installation labor was not in the quoted breakdown.
The New York total would leave grading and compaction to be arranged. The New England breakdown was also a supply quote, so neither amount should be presented as the price of a contractor-built driveway.
Water Can Change the Work You Need
Have the contractor explain where runoff will go before it adds more stone to a washed-out area. Erickson’s maintenance service includes regrading, pothole and washout repairs, and adding stone where the surface has thinned.
Ask what upkeep the contractor expects from you after installation: grading, putting back displaced stone and snow removal.
Mann’s entrance-culvert allowance is $700 to $2,500 for pipe, end sections and backfill. Its page treats that as an add-on, so do not assume every new-driveway range includes a road crossing or a drainpipe.
For a new road entrance or a changed drainage route, have the contractor confirm the local approval and design needed for your site. A stock pipe allowance does not decide the required capacity.
If you are weighing gravel against pavement, my driveway replacement guide covers asphalt and concrete work. Compare the finished construction and removal scope before choosing the surface.
Gravel Driveway Cost Questions
How much does a new gravel driveway cost per square foot?
Mann publishes $1.50 to $4 installed in Central Indiana under normal access and ground assumptions. Erickson’s separate Minnesota ranges distinguish sandy subsoil from clay with fabric and a thicker base.
How much does it cost to refresh an existing gravel driveway?
Mann’s resurfacing table gives $800 to $2,500 per project for fresh stone, grading and re-crowning. A failing base or new drainage work needs a different scope from adding a top layer.
Is gravel included in the installed price?
Mann includes stone in its new-driveway pricing. Check your own proposal before adding a separate delivery order, and distinguish an installed bid from material-and-trucking prices.
Can I price a driveway from its length in feet?
You also need its width and any separate pads or turnarounds. For example, a 12 x 100-foot lane is 1,200 square feet; a non-overlapping 20 x 20-foot pad adds 400 square feet.
Where These Prices Come From
