You smell gas when the car sits in the garage, the pump keeps clicking off when you fill up, or the shop has found a crack in the tank. Now you want to know what a new gas tank costs before you say yes.
So how much does gas tank replacement cost? Owners told NHTSA, the US road safety agency, they paid or were quoted $1,400 to $4,500 at dealers and repair shops since 2023 for a new tank.
With the carmakers’ own parts and job times, a new tank comes to $1,098.10 on a 2020 or 2021 Highlander Hybrid and $2,171.78 on a 2012 to 2015 Civic. Many tanks are also replaced free under a recall, so check that first.
In this guide I will show you what owners paid, what the carmakers’ parts and times come to, the recalls that pay for the tank, when a second opinion saves it, and the signs that your tank is leaking.
What Owners Paid
Here is what owners told NHTSA they paid or were quoted, with a link to each complaint:
- A 2019 Ram 1500 at 50,000 miles kept clicking off at the pump, and the owner got a new tank for $1,400 after two months of waiting for the part, filed in February 2024.
- A dealer told another 2019 Ram 1500 owner with the same filling problem to order a new tank at $1,925, filed in September 2023.
- For a 2018 Ram 1500 at 43,325 miles, the dealer’s remedy for a failed vent valve inside the tank was a new tank at $2,104.64, filed in March 2026.
- A Chrysler dealer gave a written estimate of about $2,525 to replace the cracked, leaking tank of a 2023 Ram ProMaster, filed in October 2026.
- A Hyundai dealer presented the owner of a 2022 Sonata with a $3,500 bill to replace the whole tank, filed in July 2025.
- An independent shop replaced the cracked tank and both fuel pumps of a 2019 Dodge Charger with Mopar parts for $4,437.03, filed in December 2025.
- An Acura dealer quoted $4,200 to $4,500 to replace the leaking tank of a 2021 TLX, and Honda offered $300 in goodwill, filed in September 2026.
So owners paid or were quoted $1,400 to $4,500 for a new tank. The Ram owners show how often one small valve inside the tank means buying the whole tank.

What the Carmakers’ Parts and Times Come To
Toyota found that some 2020 and 2021 Highlander Hybrids stop taking fuel before the tank is full, so the gauge never reads full. Its fix is a new tank, gauge bracket and sender, and Toyota pays its dealers 2.7 hours for it.
Under the 3 year or 36,000 mile basic warranty that costs you nothing. Past it, with Toyota’s parts on a dealer parts website, checked October 13, 2026, and $132 an hour, Tekmetric’s US average from June 2026:
So the Highlander comes to $741.70 in parts and $1,098.10 in all.
Honda’s tank is far dearer. Its tank set 17044-TR0-A30 fits the 2012 to 2015 Civic and is $1,894.58 on a dealer parts website. It is also the tank Honda named in its 2019 recall of the ILX, where it paid dealers 2.1 hours to replace it.
So a new Honda tank with 2.1 hours of labor comes to $2,171.78. GM pays its dealers 1.5 to 1.8 hours to replace a tank on its heavy duty pickups, so most of these bills are the part, not the labor.

Recalls That Pay for the Tank
Before you pay, enter your VIN on NHTSA’s recall page. These recalls replace the tank or its straps free:
- Ford is recalling 223,472 2023 to 2027 F-150s because the tank may not be held securely and can leak or fall off. Dealers inspect and replace the tank straps free, and letters went out on September 21, 2026.
- Hyundai is recalling 85,043 2020 to 2023 Sonatas because a damaged check valve can let the tank swell against the hot exhaust and melt. Dealers replace the valve and the tank if it is damaged.
- Acura replaces the tank free on 167 2021 to 2023 TLX models whose filler neck and tank may not have been welded right. Ford did the same on 1,159 2023 Transit vans.
- Mazda inspects some 2014 to 2016 Mazda3 tanks for a bad weld and replaces them free as needed, and Ford’s recall of 2012 to 2018 Focus purge valves covers a tank ruined by that valve.
Owners have paid before finding these. A 2014 Mazda3 owner paid $380 for the tank plus the shop’s labor, then found Mazda’s recall, filed in April 2025.
If you paid for a repair that a recall covers, ask the carmaker for a refund and keep your receipts.
When a Second Opinion Can Save the Tank
Ask the shop exactly what failed. On the Ram the vent valve is built into the tank, so the dealer said it cannot be replaced alone. But a pump, a sender or a seal inside the tank can be changed without a new tank, as the next owner found.
Audi’s tech line advised a new tank and all its parts for a leaking 2015 A3, about $5,730. An independent shop later took the tank out, replaced the jet pump inside it and kept the old tank, and the leak stopped, filed in August 2026.
Straps and bands are cheaper than a tank. A Toyota dealer said the rusted tank band of a 2014 Tacoma should be replaced for $421.58, filed in April 2023. Rusted straps should not wait, because they are all that holds the tank up.
Why You Should Not Wait
A leaking tank is a fire risk. The shop that fixed the Charger above found fuel dripping onto the heat shield over the exhaust, and said it could have caused a fire.
One fault can also lead to another. On a 2014 Ford Focus a stuck purge valve put so much vacuum on the tank that it ruined it, and the owner paid $2,088 for a new tank and a computer reset, filed in June 2026.
How to Tell Your Gas Tank Is Leaking
The first sign is often a smell of gas around the car or in the garage. The Charger’s owner noticed it was strongest with a full tank and gone below half, and the crack was where the filler pipe joins the tank.
Other signs are drips or wet spots under the rear, a pump nozzle that keeps clicking off, a gauge that never reads full, and a check engine light. Do not drive a car that drips fuel, and have it looked at the same day.
