Your diesel keeps trying to regenerate, the DPF light is on, or the truck has dropped into reduced power. The dealer says the diesel particulate filter, the DPF, needs replacing, and you want the price before you agree.
So how much does DPF filter replacement cost? With the carmakers’ own parts and job times, a new DPF comes to $1,425.27 on a 2019 to 2024 Ram 2500 or 3500 with the 6.7 Cummins and $2,411.72 on a 2018 to 2021 F-150 diesel.
On a 2022 Super Duty with the 6.7 Power Stroke it comes to $3,767.37. Owners told NHTSA, the US road safety agency, they paid or were quoted $3,000 to $6,000 at dealers since 2023.
Before you pay, check the free programs below, because Ford and Ram replace some filters at no cost. In this guide I will also show you when cleaning is enough, why a delete is not the cheap way out, and the signs of a failing DPF.
What the Carmakers’ Parts and Times Come To
Ram told its dealers in October 2024 that some 2022 and 2023 Ram 2500 and 3500 trucks with the 6.7 Cummins regenerate too often and set code P2459. The fix is a new DPF, and Ram pays its dealers 1.7 hours for it.
With Ram’s parts on a dealer parts website, checked October 13, 2026, and $132 an hour, Tekmetric’s US average from June 2026:
So the Ram comes to $1,200.87 in parts and $1,425.27 in all. The filter also carries a $500 core charge, a deposit the parts seller keeps until the old filter goes back.
Ford’s filters cost more. The one for the 2018 to 2021 F-150 with the 3.0 diesel is $1,998.25. With the two gaskets, two nuts and bolt on Ford’s parts list for the job and its 2.4 hours, that comes to $2,411.72.
On a 2022 Super Duty pickup with the 6.7, the catalyst and DPF come as one part at $3,398.76. With $117.81 of nuts, bolts and gaskets and Ford’s 1.9 hours, that is $3,767.37. Both Ford filters carry a $500 core charge too.

GM’s DPF with its pipe for 2017 to 2019 Silverado and Sierra 2500 and 3500 Duramax crew cabs is $2,054.16 to $2,215.33 before labor, plus a $400 core charge.
What Owners Paid
Here is what owners told NHTSA they paid or were quoted, with a link to each complaint:
- VW charged the owner of a 2012 Jetta TDI $3,000 to replace the DPF at about 128,000 miles, after the warranty ran out, filed in August 2023.
- A dealer told the owner of a 2019 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel on an extended warranty that a defective DPF needed over $4,600 in repairs that the warranty would not cover, filed in October 2024.
- A VW dealer in Oakland said a 2014 Jetta needed a new DPF for $6,000, filed in July 2025.
So owners paid or were quoted $3,000 to $6,000. Sometimes the fault is only a sensor: a BMW dealer recommended a $1,300 DPF sensor for a 2016 X5 diesel, filed in October 2023.

Free Fixes From Ford and Ram
Ford will replace the DPF once for free on about 80,000 2022 Super Duty trucks with the 6.7, built from April to August 2022, if code P2002 sets after its emissions recall 22E05 or 22E02.
That program, 22N05, ends one year after the recall repair or on December 31, 2026, whichever comes first. If your truck is one of them, do not wait.
Ford also replaces the DPF once at no cost on 2,239 2021 F-150 trucks with the 3.0 diesel that set a DPF code, for 15 years or 150,000 miles from the warranty start, under program 24N02.
Ram’s bulletin for 2022 and 2023 Ram 2500 and 3500 trucks built from August 2022 to May 2023 pays for the new DPF within the warranty. If yours is one of them and still under warranty, ask before you pay.
Asking can work even past the warranty. The DPF of a 2010 Jetta TDI failed just after its 80,000 mile emissions warranty, and after the owner complained, VW paid all the parts and labor of the $2,400 repair, filed in July 2013.
Cleaning or a Regeneration May Be Enough
A clogged filter is not always a broken one. On its 2017 Duramax, GM tells dealers to run a service regeneration first, a hot cycle that burns the soot off, and to replace the DPF only when soot shows up past it.
Regeneration burns soot but not ash, the leftover of burned engine oil, which builds up in the filter. Cleaning takes the ash out. Precision Diesel, a mobile diesel repair service in Southern California, prices it by method:
30 Minute DPF Clean in New Jersey starts at $179. The filter still has to come off and go back on, and on the Ram above that is the same 1.7 hours as a new one, $224.40.

Why a DPF Delete Is Not the Cheap Way Out
Taking the DPF out is tampering, and it is illegal under the Clean Air Act. Clean Air Northeast, an EPA website, warns that anyone who sells or installs a delete part can be fined over $5,000 for each one.
Dealers can be fined over $5,000 for each tampered truck. A delete can also void the warranty.
The EPA counts more than 500,000 diesel pickups whose controls were removed, about 13% of those registered with them. From fiscal 2020 to 2023 it closed 172 civil cases with $55.5 million in penalties.
Signs Your DPF Is Failing
Watch for regenerations that come too often, a DPF warning or check engine light, and a loss of power. Ram’s bulletin warns the engine will go into reduced power when code P2459 stays set for a long time.
Codes P2002 and P2459 point at the filter, so have them read before a long trip. Precision Diesel adds that a clogged filter can cut fuel economy by up to 10%.
DPF Questions You Might Have
How much does it cost to replace a DPF filter?
With the carmakers’ own parts and job times, $1,425.27 on a 2019 to 2024 Ram 2500 or 3500 with the 6.7 Cummins, $2,411.72 on a 2018 to 2021 F-150 diesel and $3,767.37 on a 2022 Super Duty 6.7. Owners paid or were quoted $3,000 to $6,000 at dealers since 2023.
How much does DPF cleaning cost?
A mobile diesel service in Southern California prices cleaning at $100 to $600 by method, and a New Jersey cleaner starts at $179. Ask whether the price includes taking the filter off and refitting it.
How long does it take to replace a DPF?
Ram pays its dealers 1.7 hours on the 2500 and 3500 with the 6.7, Ford 1.9 hours on the 2022 Super Duty and 2.4 hours on the F-150 3.0 diesel.
Is a DPF covered by warranty?
Sometimes. Ford replaces it once on some 2021 F-150 3.0 diesels for 15 years or 150,000 miles and on some 2022 Super Duty trucks until December 31, 2026, and Ram’s bulletin pays for it within the warranty.
Can I just delete the DPF?
No. It is illegal under the Clean Air Act, and anyone who installs a delete part can be fined over $5,000 for each one.
