You found grease thrown inside a front wheel, or the shop says a CV boot is torn. Caught early, a torn boot is a small job, so here is what it costs and when you need a whole new axle instead.
So how much does it cost to replace a CV boot? Luxury Auto Works, a repair shop in Austin, charges $150 to $350 per boot when the joint is still healthy. Irish Mike’s Automotive in Orlando puts a boot only job at about $150 to $520.
On some trucks a whole new axle costs about the same. With Ram’s own halfshaft and its job time, one new front axle on a Ram 1500 comes to $303.68.
In this guide I will show you what shops charge, why some carmakers replace the whole axle for a torn boot, and what owners paid. I will also show you when a greasy boot is normal and the signs that one has failed.
What Repair Shops Charge
Here are the two shops’ prices from 2026, for the boot alone and for a new axle:
In Orlando a single axle job most often comes to $400 to $800 on common cars, and climbs toward $1,200 and up on higher end or all wheel drive models. So catching a torn boot early can spare you the axle bill.
Why Some Carmakers Replace the Whole Axle
Ram found that the outer boots on some 2021 Ram 1500 trucks could leak grease within 500 miles, and that boots on some 2023 models were damaged during assembly.
Its fix for a torn, scuffed or leaking boot is a new halfshaft, not a new boot. Ram pays its dealers 0.3 hour to inspect the boots, 0.6 hour to replace one halfshaft and 0.9 hour for both.

With the parts on Ram’s 2023 list for one side from a dealer parts website, checked October 13, 2026, and $132 an hour, Tekmetric’s US average from June 2026:
So one new front axle comes to $303.68, plus a $50.00 core deposit you get back for the old shaft. That is inside the shops’ price for a boot alone.
The halfshaft grease on Ram’s list has no price online, and trucks with air suspension also get a stabilizer nut.
Jeep did the same on some 2015 and 2016 Grand Cherokee and Dodge Durango models that leaked grease from the left front inner boot. It paid 0.9 to 1.1 hours to replace the whole left front half shaft.
What Owners Paid
Here is what owners told NHTSA, the US road safety agency, they paid or were quoted, with a link to each complaint:
- A dealer charged $475 to fix a 2020 Ford Explorer’s front axle boot that leaked grease, filed in June 2025.
- The passenger front CV boot of a 2020 Kia Telluride leaked grease and caused damage estimated at $1,000, filed in February 2024.
So owners paid or were quoted $475 to $1,000, the higher one after the leak had done damage. A boot caught while the joint is quiet stays near the shops’ boot prices.

A Greasy Boot Is Not Always a Bad Boot
BMW and MINI tell their technicians that some grease and dirt on the CV boots is normal. In their January 2026 bulletins they say not to replace a boot or an axle for that alone.
They replace one only when the boot is cracked or torn, a clamp is missing or moves easily, or grease is slinging around the joint. Ask your shop to show you which of those it found before you pay.
Signs of a Torn CV Boot
Dark grease flung on the inside of the wheel or on the lower control arm is the main sign of a leaking boot. Once dirt and water get into the grease, the joint wears fast, the Austin shop warns.
A clicking noise when you turn at low speed, a vibration when you accelerate, or a clunk when you shift from drive to reverse means the joint itself is wearing. Once the joint clicks, the Orlando shop advises a whole new axle.
CV Boot Questions You Might Have
How much does it cost to replace a CV boot?
A repair shop in Austin charges $150 to $350 per boot while the joint is healthy, and an Orlando shop puts a boot only job at about $150 to $520.
Is it better to replace the CV boot or the whole axle?
Replace the boot if it is torn but the joint is quiet. Once the joint clicks or vibrates, a new axle is the better fix. On some cars, like a Ram 1500 at $303.68 with Ram’s parts and time, a new axle costs about the same.
Can I drive with a torn CV boot?
Have it fixed soon. Grease leaks out and grit gets in, the joint wears quickly, and a boot job turns into an axle job.
Why is there grease on my CV boot?
Some grease and dirt on a boot is normal, BMW and MINI say. A boot needs replacing when it is cracked or torn, a clamp is missing or loose, or grease is slinging around the joint.
How long does it take to replace a CV axle?
Ram pays its dealers 0.6 hour to replace one front halfshaft on the Ram 1500, and an Orlando shop says an axle job usually takes 1.5 to 3 hours.
