You turn the heat on during a cold morning, and nothing comes out of the vents. Or the fan only blows on the highest setting, or it squeals and rattles. Now the shop wants to replace the blower motor.
So how much does a blower motor replacement cost? About $165 to $532 at a shop for most cars, worked out from the motor’s price and about an hour of labor. The motor alone was $32.89 to $222.71 for the two Toyotas I checked.
In this guide I will show you how to tell the motor from the cheaper resistor, what the parts and the labor cost, a free fix some Tacomas get, and what owners paid.
Is It the Motor or the Resistor?
Before you pay for a motor, make sure it is the motor. Mr Automotive Repair, a shop in Gainesville, Georgia, matches each symptom to a part in a post from June 16, 2026:
The shop warns against replacing a blower motor just because the fan only works on high. Its resistor job usually runs $120 to $220 in total, with 0.5 to 1.0 hour of labor.
But a dying motor can take the resistor with it. The same shop links a burning smell and a high current draw to a failing blower motor that overloads the resistor.
Weak airflow can also be a dirty cabin air filter. Luxury Auto Works, a shop in Austin, Texas, writes that pollen clogs these filters, chokes the airflow and makes the blower work harder.
Honda’s bulletin for the Acura RLX also has the technician inspect the filter before the blower motor is replaced.

What a New Blower Motor Costs
Here are prices I checked on October 7, 2026, from RockAuto, a parts website, and ToyotaPartsDeal, a Toyota dealer’s parts website:
The Georgia shop gives $150 to $400 for a motor. So Toyota’s own part for the Camry sits inside that range, and the TYC motors sit under it.
How Long the Job Takes
On many cars the motor comes out fast. The makers’ own warranty times show it:
- Toyota pays its dealers 0.4 hour to replace the blower motor on a 2016 or 2017 Tacoma, and that includes 0.1 hour for paperwork.
- Honda’s 2020 bulletin for the 2014 to 2018 Acura RLX gives 0.3 hour for a new blower motor.
- Toyota’s 2016 bulletin for the Scion iA gives 1.0 hour to remove and replace the whole blower unit.
An independent shop sets its own time. FixService, a repair shop in New York, starts at $140 for a heater blower motor job and gives it 1 to 6 hours, depending on the car.
So I used one hour at $132, Tekmetric’s US average labor rate for June 2026. Tekmetric makes software for repair shops.
The TYC motor for a Tacoma and one hour is $32.89 + $132 = $164.89. Toyota’s Camry motor and one hour is $222.71 + $132 = $354.71. At the top of the Georgia shop’s motor price, it is $400 + $132 = $532.

Check for a Free Fix First
If you drive a 2016 or 2017 Toyota Tacoma, ask a Toyota dealer to check your VIN for Special Service Campaign J0N.
Toyota found that the blower motor fan hub in some of these trucks may have been made with the wrong dimensions, and such a hub can crack over time. That leads to noise, and in the end to a fan that does not work.
Toyota’s notice from August 2018 covers about 185,300 Tacomas built from early June 2016 to late August 2017. The dealer replaces the blower motor and fan at no charge.
What Owners Paid
Here is what owners on Tacoma World, Tesla Motors Club and SwedeSpeed paid or were quoted, with links to their posts:
- A Tacoma owner returned a noisy VDO motor from RockAuto and bought a Toyota one from the dealer for $140, in January 2020.
- In the same thread, another owner fitted a $38 TYC motor from Amazon and could not tell the difference.
- A third owner paid $131 for Toyota’s 87103-04044 motor, in February 2020, and found it super quiet.
- A Model S owner bought the blower for $53.25 from a Tesla service center and fitted it in 35 minutes, in September 2023.
- The owner of a 2006 Volvo XC90 was quoted $2,900 by the Volvo dealer for the blower motor and the power stage, in June 2023. The dealer wanted 2 days for the job.
The same Volvo owner found blower motors from $77 to over $500 for Volvo’s own part at FCP Euro, an online parts shop. So most of that quote was labor.
Can You Replace It Yourself?
On many cars, yes. A Tacoma owner called the fan super easy to replace, with 3 screws and 15 minutes out and back in.
Check the plug at the motor before you buy anything. A 2011 Tacoma owner replaced the resistor and the wiring harness, and the fan still cut out.
Then the owner found a burnt connector at the fan, and the next part was another $15 on Amazon.

Blower Motor Questions You Might Have
How much does it cost to replace a blower motor?
About $165 to $532 at a shop for most cars, worked out from a $32.89 to $400 motor and an hour of labor at $132. Some cars cost far more: a Volvo dealer quoted $2,900 for a 2006 XC90.
Why does my car’s fan only work on high?
The Georgia shop above writes that the blower motor resistor has almost certainly failed. Its resistor job runs $120 to $220 in total.
How long does a blower motor replacement take?
Toyota’s warranty time for a 2016 or 2017 Tacoma is 0.4 hour, and Honda’s for the Acura RLX is 0.3 hour. A New York shop gives 1 to 6 hours, depending on the car.
Is my Tacoma’s blower motor covered for free?
Maybe. Toyota’s Special Service Campaign J0N replaces the blower motor and fan at no charge on about 185,300 Tacomas built from June 2016 to August 2017. A Toyota dealer can check your VIN.
Can a dirty cabin filter make the fan weak?
Yes. Pollen can clog the filter and choke the airflow, and Honda’s Acura bulletin has the filter checked before the motor is replaced.
