Short answer

Replacing a blend door actuator costs $107.14 to $170.58 when it is easy to reach and $722.15 to $863 when the climate housing behind the dash comes out, with Ford's own parts and job times at the average US shop rate. Owners paid or were quoted $210 to $800.

Your heat or air conditioning blows the wrong temperature, the air comes out of the wrong vents, or something clicks behind the dash, and the shop says it is the blend door actuator. You want to know what the fix costs before you say yes.

So how much does blend door actuator replacement cost? With the carmaker’s own part and job time at the average US shop rate, it comes to $107.14 to $170.58 when the actuator is easy to reach, on Ford’s F-150 and Fiesta.

When the climate housing behind the dash has to come out, the same F-150 job comes to $722.15 to $863. Owners told NHTSA, the US road safety agency, they paid or were quoted $210 to $800 since 2022.

In this guide I will show you what the carmakers’ parts and times come to, why the dash makes the difference, when the clicking is not the actuator, what owners paid, and how to tell it is failing.

What the Carmakers’ Parts and Times Come To

Ford, Chrysler and GM list their own times for this job in service bulletins. With Ford’s actuators on a dealer parts website, checked October 9, 2026, and $132 an hour, Tekmetric’s US average from June 2026:

F-150 2015 to 2019, one actuator$54.34 actuator + 0.4 hour$107.14
F-150 with dual automatic climate, two actuators$108.68 actuators + 0.4 hour$161.48
Fiesta 2014 to 2018, air distribution actuator$38.58 actuator + 1.0 hour$170.58
Grand Caravan, Town and Country 2014 to 20150.6 hour, plus the actuator$79.20 labor
Equinox, Terrain 2015, mode actuator1.0 hour, plus the actuator$132 labor

So the actuator itself is cheap, $38.58 to $54.34 for Ford’s. What you pay for is the time to reach it, and that depends on where it sits in your car.

When the Dash Has to Come Out

Ford’s F-150 bulletin has two prices. If the temperature door still binds after a new actuator, the climate housing behind the dash comes out to grease the door, which Ford pays as 5.0 to 5.6 hours.

With the actuators, one or two new cams and a bolt, that F-150 job comes to $722.15 with one actuator and $863 with two, plus a little grease.

That is why some quotes jump. A dealer quoted $1,500 for a 2009 Ram 1500 in 2019, because the dash had to come out to reach the actuator. So ask whether yours comes out from under the dash or needs the dash removed.

The Clicking Is Not Always the Actuator

Ford found that on 2014 to 2018 Fiestas, the click from the left of the dash can be wiring touching the actuator’s gear. Its fix starts with moving the wiring, 0.8 hour, and replaces the actuator only if the click stays.

GM found something similar on 2015 Equinox and Terrain models, where the OnStar cable could block the mode door. And Chrysler has its dealers recalibrate the van’s actuator with a scan tool before replacing it.

A 2019 Pacifica owner, quoted $500 for a new recirculation door actuator, fitted one at home, and the flapping came back the next day. So ask for a calibration and a check of the wiring before the part.

What Owners Paid

Here is what owners told NHTSA they paid or were quoted, with a link to each complaint:

  • A Hyundai dealer replaced the temperature actuator of a 2016 Tucson for $210, filed in February 2023.
  • A repair shop fixed the broken HVAC actuator of a 2015 Chevrolet Equinox, which had stopped the defroster in a snow storm, for $300, filed in February 2023.
  • A dealer quoted $500 for the recirculation door actuator of a 2019 Chrysler Pacifica, after $99.95 to diagnose it, filed in May 2026.
  • The blend door of a 2015 GMC Terrain broke in the middle of winter and cost $800 to fix, filed in April 2022.
  • On a 2008 Chevrolet Impala, a repair shop put the parts under $100 and the labor over $1,200, filed in April 2022.

So owners paid or were quoted $210 to $800, and over $1,200 in labor when the job goes deep into the dash.

How to Tell the Blend Door Actuator Is Failing

Owners describe heat or air conditioning stuck on one temperature, air from the wrong vents, a defroster that stops working, and clicking or flapping behind the dash.

Ford’s F-150 bulletin adds a lack of heat or cooling when you turn the dial, with code B1081:07 stored. A shop can read the climate codes and run the actuator calibration with a scan tool.

A defroster that stops working is a safety problem, not only comfort, because the windshield fogs over. One owner above lost the defroster in a snow storm, so get it fixed before the cold comes.

Blend Door Actuator Questions You Might Have

How much does it cost to replace a blend door actuator?

With the carmaker’s part and job time at $132 an hour, $107.14 to $170.58 when it is easy to reach, and $722.15 to $863 on an F-150 when the climate housing comes out. Owners paid or were quoted $210 to $800.

How much is a blend door actuator?

Ford’s are $38.58 for the Fiesta and $54.34 for the F-150 on a dealer parts website. Most of the bill is labor.

How long does it take to replace a blend door actuator?

Ford, Chrysler and GM pay their dealers 0.4 to 1.0 hour when it is easy to reach. Ford pays 5.0 to 5.6 hours on the F-150 when the climate housing comes out.

Can I drive with a bad blend door actuator?

Yes, as long as the defroster still clears the windshield. If it does not, the glass can fog over in cold or wet weather.

Can a blend door actuator be recalibrated?

Yes. Chrysler’s bulletin has dealers run a calibration test first and replace the actuator only if it fails, and Ford checks the wiring first on the Fiesta.
