A timing chain quote can make you wonder whether your Q5 is worth keeping. Before you decide, find out whether the shop is replacing worn timing parts or repairing an engine that has already jumped timing.
So for a 2013 to 2018 Audi Q5 2.0T, Autos of Chicago publishes timing chain packages from $1,650 to $2,350. Its standard chain and tensioner job is at the lower end; the extra chain kit and cover cost more.
I will walk you through that difference, Audi’s settlement coverage, the parts a chain job involves, and what US Q5 owners reported.
What Is Included in the Q5 Price?
Autos of Chicago, in Arlington Heights, Illinois, publishes these two packages for 2013 to 2018 Q5 2.0T models. They are one specialist’s prices, checked October 17, 2026:
The table matters more than the word “complete” on a quote. This shop’s cheaper package does not list the new lower metal cover included in its larger package. Have the shop identify the package and any tax before booking.

These packages cover the four-cylinder 2.0T, including the 2014 Q5. A Q5 with a different engine needs its own quote.
Did Audi Extend the Timing Chain Warranty?
Yes, but the model year alone does not decide coverage. Audi’s earlier bulletin AWA-18-15 includes certain 2011 and 2012 Q5s with the 2.0L EA888 engine and warranty key U35.
That extension runs for 10 years or 100,000 miles from the original in-service date, whichever comes first. The bulletin also describes partial coverage for engine damage caused by a failed chain or tensioner.
The later Opheim notice describes a proposed settlement for certain 2012 to 2015 Q5 VINs. Its terms use a 10-year or 100,000-mile limit and require proof of oil maintenance within a 10% allowance.
The notice set August 31, 2024 as the past-repair claim deadline. For cars already beyond the time limit on May 13, 2024, the notice gave a temporary extension through September 10, 2024. Those dates have passed.
The notice was issued before final approval. I cannot confirm the final settlement terms from that document alone.
I would ask an Audi dealer to check your VIN, original in-service date and service records before authorizing work. These documents do not establish blanket coverage for every 2009 to 2016 Q5, or a new ten years from the settlement.

Why a Cheap Chain Does Not Mean a Cheap Repair
The chain itself is only one line of the bill. Autos of Chicago’s standard package also replaces the tensioner, three guides, the crank seal and the upper cover gasket, and you pay the labor to reach them.
The chain keeps the crankshaft and camshafts in time. The tensioner takes up slack, while the guides control the chain’s path. A stretched chain needs more than a new tensioner.
If your diagnosis is only a tensioner fault, the separate timing chain tensioner guide explains that smaller job across other engines.
Oil leaking from a cover is a different starting point. Our timing cover gasket guide covers resealing; a leak by itself does not establish that your Q5 needs a chain.
What Owners Paid or Were Quoted for a 2014 Q5
The 2014 Q5 complaints on CarComplaints include these US accounts. Their dates are useful because these dealer prices predate the later settlement:
- A Seattle owner reported needing a chain and tensioner replacement at an Audi dealer for over $5,100, dated November 21, 2023, at 59,416 miles.
- A Findlay owner received a dealer estimate of just over $3,000 for the timing chain alone, dated July 21, 2020, at 67,000 miles.
- A Chicago owner was quoted $4,000 by the dealer, dated March 1, 2021, at 75,000 miles. The owner explicitly said they had not paid for the repair.
The Findlay visit also found worn wheel bearings, but the owner separated the chain quote from that work. When you compare your estimate, separate unrelated repairs in the same way.
When the Bill Becomes an Engine Repair
A Q5 owner told NHTSA that the chain jumped timing and bent the valves. The April 29, 2017 complaint gives a $9,635 quote for the cylinder head, chain and related parts.
That owner’s quote was $4,800 in parts + $4,835 in labor = $9,635. It explains why a damaged-engine estimate cannot be compared directly with the Chicago shop’s timing packages.
If your engine runs badly after a sudden rattle, stop driving and have it diagnosed. Before accepting a cylinder head or engine replacement, ask what testing established the damage and what the proposed repair includes.
Questions About Your Q5 Timing Chain
Does the 2014 Audi Q5 have settlement coverage?
The 2024 proposed-settlement notice names certain 2014 Q5 VINs and sets age, mileage and maintenance conditions. It does not confirm final approval or coverage for a repair today.
Is replacing only the chain enough?
Autos of Chicago’s standard package includes the tensioner and guides as well as the primary chain. A quote for just a loose chain part leaves out the rest of that repair.
Does the advertised price include an engine rebuild?
No. The packages above cover timing work. Bent valves or other internal damage need a separately priced repair.
Can I use this price for a Q5 V6?
No. These published packages are for the 2.0T.
