If you love playing basketball, you might have wondered how much it costs to rent a court for yourself or your group. Maybe you want to practice, play a weekly game with friends, or run a small tournament.
The good news is that it is often cheaper than people think, especially at a city recreation center.
In this guide I will show you the real hourly rates from city fee schedules and a private sports complex, and the extra fees that come with them.
How Much Does It Cost to Rent a Basketball Court?
Here are the published hourly rates I found for an indoor full court:
So a city gym costs about $30 to $75 an hour, and a private sports complex can be $120 or more. That is why I always check the city rec center first.
Half Courts and Outdoor Courts Cost Less
If you only need half a court, or you are happy to play outside, you can pay a lot less:
And of course, many public outdoor courts in parks are free to use when nobody has booked them.
Residents Pay Less
Look at the gaps above. In Burleson a non-resident pays $67 an hour for a full court, against $39 for a resident or member. In Lincoln it is $75 against $60.
So if you live in the city, say so when you book and have proof of your address ready. It can save you a lot over a season.
Extra Fees to Expect
The hourly rate is not always the whole bill. These extras showed up in the fee schedules:
- A deposit. Burleson asks for a $50 deposit, and Lincoln a $400 refundable damage deposit.
- Set-up. Lincoln charges $30 per court to set it up.
- A scoreboard and staff. Lincoln charges $50 a day for the scoreboard and $25 an hour for each scorekeeper.
- Extra city fees. San Diego adds its Recreation Center Fund fee to every rental.
If you are running a tournament, ask whether you also need your own insurance. San Diego’s fee schedule says some permits require it.
Tips for Saving Money on Court Rentals
- Start with your city or county recreation center, then compare private gyms.
- Book a half court if you only have a few players.
- Book early. Burleson, for example, wants reservations 2 weeks ahead and allows one booking per group in any 48 hours.
- Split the cost. At $60 an hour, ten players pay $6 each.
- Ask which times are quieter, since those slots are easier to get.
